Overview

Covalent was formed in 2003 when Councils were struggling with the volume of work involved in gathering, measuring and reporting performance data for the recently introduced government initiatives.

Since then Covalent has grown to become one of the UK's leading cloud Performance and Governance management software vendors, offering solutions to both public and private sector clients.

Covalent's suite of applications now addresses both Corporate & Employee Performance Management and Governance, Compliance and Risk Management.

The Covalent Story

Covalent was created to address the needs of local government to report on their performance with the introduction of the Government’s Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPIs) in the early 2000s. The intention of the initiative was for local government to compare their performance against other, similar councils for the services it offered.

At the time most public bodies were struggling with home grown or spreadsheet systems to manage the data and report to statutory bodies. Covalent delivered an innovative solution that linked all this data together to deliver consistency and ease of reporting, and most importantly was the first cloud-based offering.

Since then BVPIs for local government have been replaced with a variety of other performance measuring initiatives, other government funded organisations like the NHS have become far more regulated in terms of performance measurement, and the private sector has become much more aware of the need for good governance, risk mitigation and performance management.

Since we launched our first product we have developed a suite of applications to support all areas of Performance, Governance and Risk. Our latest generation has moved the products from a Java-based platform to Browser, meaning that anyone can access Covalent from any device wherever they are. We have expanded our footprint beyond the UK, into the US and Australia and we service clients not only in the public sector, but in manufacturing, utilities, food and drink, and much more.

As a result Covalent has grown to become one of the UK’s leading cloud Performance, Governance and Risk Management software vendors for both public and private sector.

January 2003: Covalent founded

June 2003: First customer, Sedgemoor and Wychavon District Council’s using Corporate Performance Management

December 2004: First housing association customer, Ekaya Housing Association

September 2005: Due to growth Covalent expand to bigger offices in Taunton

December 2005: Seed investment from YFM Group

September 2006: First Further Education customer, Gloucestershire College

September 2006: Somerset Business Awards – New Business of the Year

March 2008: First US customer, City of Orlando

November 2009: 20,000 active users of Covalent

December 2010: First Australian health trust, SA Health

January 2011: Enterprise Risk Management concept launched

September 2011: 100 councils using Covalent

January 2012: Product suite extended to incorporate Employee Performance Management

September 2012: Browser concept started

January 2013: Browser build begins

February 2014: 250th customer, NHS Newham CCG
